Trailer ABS

ABS is essential not only for trucks and buses but also for tractor-trailer combination vehicles. When the wheels of a tractor - trailer lock, the driver is unable to steer around obstacles or more dangerously, loses stability.

Wheel lock can result in

Plow Out

       When the front steering wheels of the tractor lock, the combination, though stable, can no longer be steered and it plows straight ahead losing its ability to steer around obstacles.

Jackknifing

             When the rear wheels of the tractor lock, the tractor swings around rapidly and there is no time for the driver to react to bring the vehicle back to stability. This is the most dangerous situation.

Trailer Swing

       When the rear wheels of the trailer lock, trailer swing occurs. Though trailer swing is not as sudden and  dangerous as jackknifing, because the spin out is slower, it is still dangerous because it can hit vehicles in the traffic.

Thus

ABS on tractor alone prevents both Plow Out and Jackknifing but not Trailer Swing.

ABS on trailer alone can prevent Trailer Swing but cannot prevent Plow Out and Jackknifing.

ABS on both tractor and trailer prevents Plow Out, Jackknifing and Trailer Swing.
