History | System | Features | Need | Benefits Road Accidents
India ranks 4th in the total number of accidents that occur annually. But more disheartening is the fact that India has the highest number of fatalities due to road accidents. While the fatality rate per accident is 1 in 53 in USA, 1 in 81 in Japan,1 in 45 in Germany,1 in 67 in U.K and 1 in 16 in France, it is as high as 1 fatality per 4 accidents in India. Every year, about 80,000* Indians are killed on road and 3 lakh* Indians are injured.
The
road accident fatalities for the year 1999 stands at an all-time high of
81,036*. This is an increase of 5.6% over the year 1995. On an average,
fatalities have increased by 4.4% annually from 1995-1999
Although
trucks and buses account for only 14% of the total vehicle population in the
country, they are involved in 41%*
of the road accident
fatalities. This emphasizes the need for making commercial vehicles and
passenger buses safer and less prone to accidents. It is for this segment of trucks and buses that SCL ABS has been developed. ABS primarily ensures stability and steerability of the vehicle under panic braking conditions and is thus a major technology breakthrough to improve road safety. *Source: "Accidents and Suicides in India - 1999" - National Crime Records Bureau, Ministry of Home Affairs. |
