History | System | Features | Need | Benefits History of ABS ABS is not new to the automotive world. In fact, a full mechanical version of ABS was invented in the 1920s. Antilock brake systems were first employed in airplanes during the 1950s but mass production and use of ABS on automobiles commenced in the early 1980s. ABS for commercial vehicles was released by WABCO in 1981. By 1990, ABS was available on many cars and trucks in the United States (U.S.) and Europe. Currently, ABS is mandatory on trucks, buses and tractor-trailers in Europe, U.S. and widely prevalent in many other developed and developing countries. In India, Sundaram-Clayton Ltd (SCL), the pioneer and market leader in Air Brake Systems for commercial vehicles, launched Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) in Jan' 02. |
